We use both but generally prefer the lock-ons for a host of reasons: 1. They're already there when you climb into the tree. That means less noise, most of the time no light is needed, and since the stand has been out there for a while - no scent from the stand. This makes the whole process easier 2. If you are fortunate enough to take a deer from that stand, you don't have to worry about getting the stand out along with the deer. 3. Lock-ons mean that we've already been in the area, picked the best spot/tree and done the necessary pruning of lanes etc. You can do this with climbers prior to the season as well but I think many times the "Thoroughness" of the job is neglected. 4. Climbers are hard to get up pine trees and I love pines for backing 5. We video our hunts and we look for trees where 2 people won't stick out like a sore thumb. Most "climber-friendly" trees cause us to stick out more. 6. Some spots don't have "climber friendly" trees in the "spot" you "need" to have the stand in.ON THE OTHER HAND, Climbers have there place, we used them last year to get in closer on a spot where some does had been coming out into a green field night after night, and Yes, we videoed the hunt (so I guess we were OK in that tree). My point being that if you find that you have to move your stand location, climbers are well suited for that. Taking the stand in and out with you also eliminates the problem of someone stealing your stand :-( Good Question H1 ---------- www.theheritagehunters.com

I prefer to use a climber, the Summit Viper SS. I like the versatility of being able to climb an 8" tree or a 24" tree. Also if I have set up on a trail and see that the deer are using a different trail, I can easily climb down and move closer with very little noise. One thing I do is before the expanded and regular archery season opens is scout new property. I have trees and shooting lanes that I have had for 4 or 5 years that require a little trimming from year to year and I usually do this in July and August. When the season starts I will have about 12 to 20 stand sites in the Expanded archery area and about 12 for the regular season. Also I do not have to worry about having my stand stolen. I have had it happen to me and it really sucks to get there only to find out that some one stole your stand. The part that really sucks is, you know it was another Bowhunter.Hunter1

I can't believe that someone would steal another hunters stand. I have a ladder stand big enough for two people to sit in. My first and only tree stand I liked sitting in it but it is a two man job setting it up. Also it is hard to carry through thick cover and is a little on the heavy side.

Quote: "I can't believe that someone would steal another hunters stand" I wish it didn't but it does happen. I've had some stolen and I've had quite a few tree steps taken. We lock all our stands now but the sad truth is, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it, no matter how you lock it. ---------- www.theheritagehunters.com

I for 1 when I see someone elses stand, I look to see why it was placed there and what activity there has been to it. But I have also walked by these same stands and found them gone. Last fall hunting in the expanded zone in Cumberland, Me. I found a sign placed on an Oak tree. I could see where the tree steps had been. Sign read: To the useless S.O.B. that stole my Lone Wolfe Treestand. I hope you enjoy it better than would have since I NEVER GOT TO USE IT, and thanks to you this land will be POSTED ABSOLUTELY NO TRESPASSING EVER. Land owner Cumberland, ME

I like ladder stands best. I lock them to the trees and hunt on private land only so I do not worry about someone stealing one. Is that pic real with the 2 deer with snow up to thier necks? Joplin, MO

yes the pic is real Maine's deer herd is expected to loose 30% in population from this winter. IF&W are thinking of decreasing the any-deer permits by 10,000 and/or going bucks only in some WMD's The coastal deer should be okay.

I used a ladder stand this year, it is my first stand but I did not lock it. That would be tuff to steal where I have it set up but if someone had enough balls I guess they could take it. Truthfully if they took it on the last day I wouldn't be to upset. It's a cheap stand and I hate carring it out. lol

I've got two climbers, about a dozen lock ons and ladder stands. Depend on where I'm hunting. In locations I've hunted a lot and know the deer and how they travel, I like the hang on stands. If hunting new property? the climber is the way to roll so I can change location at anytime. Actually hunted an area where all the deer were coming in just out of bow range. Climbed down and moved over about 25 yards. Half an hour after moving I arrowed a nice 7 pointer ; )

I have the ultimate story for tree stand loss. Not only did someone steal the stand(locked) but they stole the tree it was in. I use a climber...it goes where I go.

i use both but like the climber much better its lighter and easier to get around the woods i horn hunt so i need to go where most dont go for the big guys. the viper classic works great for me. i use platform stands around food plots about 4 foot square so i can sit a chair in them and be comfy for the day.

Does any one have a lone wolf alpha hand climber treestand because I'v been looking around and it looks like the smallest and easiest to move from what I have seen and was wondering if any one had any good or bad things to say about the stand.

Has anyone used the equalizer climbing treestand? I watched the video it looks like a stand I may have to have in the future. www.equalizerstands.com
